Pumpkin Fruit Skewer Turkey

Use a pumpkin, grapefruit or cantaloupe to make this fun, fruit-filled turkey display for Thanksgiving. Use strawberries, mandarin oranges, and grapes to create this colorful turkey. A pear slice and a few pepper slices complete the head. Blueberries or raisins on a toothpick can serve as eyes. This healthy fruit display is gluten free, dairy free, egg free, and refined sugar free.

  • Serving tray
  • Strainer
  • 8-inch bamboo skewers
  • 6-inch bamboo skewers
  • Toothpicks
  • Small dish or glass
  • Plastic wrap

Ingredients

  • 1 whole small pumpkin (body)
  • 1 pear, sliced lengthwise (head)
  • 2 red and yellow peppers, sliced (feathers, feet, and wings)
  • 1-2 cups whole strawberries
  • 1-2 cups red grapes
  • 1-2 cups green grapes
  • 12-14 mandarin orange segments - 2 oranges (top feathers)
  • 1 long slice of red pepper (for wattle)
  • 2 blueberries or raisins (eyes)
  • Lemon juice

Directions

    Use strainer to rinse fruit

    Place pumpkin in center of serving tray

  3. 3

    Prop it up lengthwise with small dish or glass

    Slice a third of pear off, leave skin on

  5. 5

    Place in small bowl with lemon juice (to prevent browning)

    Use toothpicks to place pear slice in front as head

    Cut up red and yellow pepper into shapes for feet, nose, wattle and front feathers

    Place halved toothpicks into pumpkin for first layer of pepper feathers on top and for wings at side of pumpkin

    Add pepper slices to each toothpick as first layer of feathers (alternate colors, if you wish)

    Add green grapes, red grapes and a strawberry to 6-inch skewers for the next layer of feathers

    Poke skewers into top of pumpkin after first layer of pepper slice feathers

    Add red or green grapes on to eight 8-inch skewers

    Poke 8-inch skewers with grapes into pumpkin next, this is third layer of feathers

    Add mandarin orange segments on end of each skewer

    Edge serving tray with remaining fruit

    Poke a short toothpick piece into pear head and add a triangle pepper piece for nose and a long red slice for wattle

    Poke two short toothpick pieces into pear head as eyes

    Then add blueberries or raisins onto toothpick to complete eyes

    Serve up this fun, fruit turkey display at Thanksgiving (Don’t forget to take a photo!)

📦 Storage

Wrap turkey with plastic wrap and store in the fridge until ready to serve. Notes: It’s best to prepare the fruit turkey on the day of the dinner. Use another large fruit for the body, like a grapefruit, pineapple or dragon fruit A ripe pear or a half of a large orange can be used if it’s placed down flat on the tray and smaller skewers or toothpicks are then poked into it
